PaysonJewelry Blog Entry 12-2-07

Sunday afternoon and the work doesn't end...

I spent yesterday in class and then visiting shows to consider for next year. One was the Park Avenue Armory show here in NYC - it's a juried show and I'm not sure if I want to pursue that just yet. The second was a smaller more informal show by the NY Junior League - their annual Golden Tree event. It seemed quiet and there was quite a bit of jewelry there - nothing like mine - mostly gemstone bead jewelry. Very beautiful, and very different. That's a good thing. The problem there was the traffic - not much. The vendors were all saying how few people there had been for the whole 4 days.

Today I'm working on making earrings and getting organized for a small event tomorrow evening. The Ladies Who Launch (www.ladieswholaunch.com) holiday party and sale. There will be quite a few women from the organization there showing their wares - always really interesting to see the wide variety and the amazing creativity of a group of women building their own businesses. I'll share a few of my favorites with you over the next few weeks - the first one makes a wonderful Holiday gift or addition to any gathering...

Fretzels by Jill (www.fretzels.com). Jill makes the most amazing and wonderful chocolate covered pretzels! I have sent these pretzels to my family members for the last two years. The quality is unsurpased and the flavor amazing - Jill has thought of every combination of chocolate and candy and and put on a pretzel! She's branching out now and developing a few wholesale clients, so you may see the pretzels in a store near you soon - try them from her website and be the first of your friends to know how amazing they are. She's also told me that she is supposed to be featured on The Today Show on Tuesday morning Dec 4, 2007. Check out the show or the website for more information.

Enjoy!

PaysonJewelry Blog Entry 11-30-07

The first blog entry is always the hardest! :-)

I guess I'll start by talking about my favorite jewelry... My favorite piece of jewelry has to be the ring. I think mainly it is because rings are for the wearer's enjoyment more than any other piece of jewelry. And I like all kinds of rings, gold rings, silver rings, platinum rings, rings with stones, carved metal rings. To me the most important aspects that make up a great ring are beauty (obviously the single most important aspect!), wear-ability and quality.

For example, when I create a gold ring I want to make sure that I provide a beautiful and unique design as well as a wonderful finish (whether that is polished or matte or something else). And, to me a gold ring is not worth wearing if it doesn't have some weight to it. Not so much that it is too thick or heavy, but enough that it feels substantial, real, solid. So much of today's gold jewelry, gold rings, gold necklaces - everything - are hollowed so thin that they feel flimsy and cheap. I probably make my gold rings and other pieces thicker than they need to be, spending more on the metal than necessary, but I feel it adds tremendous substance to the quality. Quality that creates a piece that becomes a favorite, an heirloom and an important piece of jewelry for the one who wears it. I hope you agree!
